The Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications

is a facility of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft zur Förderung der angewandten Forschung e. V. (FhG; “Fraunhofer Society for the advancement of applied research”), located in Berlin. The activities of the institute concern applied research and development in the subjects of physics, electrical engineering and computer science.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich-Hertz-Institut is a world-wide leader in the development of mobile and fixed broadband communication networks and multimedia systems. Whether photonic components and systems, fibre-optic sensor systems or high-speed hardware architectures - the Heinrich Hertz Institute works, together with international partners from research and industry and for the international market, on infrastructures for the "Gigabit Society".

Besides, future applications for broadband networks are developed - main research is 3DTV, 3D displays, HDTV, man–machine interaction by gesture control, optical satellite communication, high-speed hardware architectures as well as image processing and transmission and interactive media use.
